Israel's area codes: the full map and the history behind them

Behind the three digits that open every Israeli phone number sits sixty years of history: switchboard operators connecting calls by hand, digit reforms, area codes that vanished from the map - all the way to an era where a prefix no longer reveals where you sit or who serves you. Here’s the full map of Israel’s dialing codes, and how it came to be.

The history: from the switchboard to the reforms

Before 1968: “Operator, connect me to Haifa”

Until the late 1960s Israel had no direct long-distance dialing. Calling another city meant dialing 0 and asking the operator to connect you - a manual process that could take long minutes.

February 1968: area codes are born

With the launch of direct inter-city dialing, the country was divided into dialing regions, and the familiar codes - 02 for Jerusalem, 03 for Tel Aviv, 04 for Haifa - entered service, mirroring the telephone-exchange map of the day.

1995: the move to seven digits

Demand outgrew the network: starting in 1995, landline numbers gradually stretched from six to seven digits, doubling the numbering space in every region.

2000: farewell to 06 and 07

In 2000 two whole dialing regions were retired: 06, serving the north-east (Tiberias, Afula, Safed), merged into 04; and 07, serving the south (Be’er Sheva, Eilat), merged into 08. Beyond simplification, consumers gained too: calls that had counted as “long-distance” within the north or south became local.

2004: mobile goes to ten digits

The 05x family filled up as well - and in 2004 mobile numbers lengthened to ten digits, multiplying the available numbering space and paving the way for new sub-prefixes (055, 058 and more).

The decade after: portability and VoIP change the rules

Two regulatory moves finally severed the link between a prefix and an identity: number portability let subscribers switch carriers - mobile and fixed - and take their number along, so a prefix no longer identifies a provider; and in parallel, the 07x family (072, 073, 077 and friends) was allocated to newer operators and VoIP services - nationwide prefixes bound to no city. What it means for your business in 2026

• A prefix is branding, not an address. An 03 number signals “central-Israel business”, 02 says Jerusalem, 077 says nationwide and digital. In the cloud PBX era they all work from anywhere - the choice is a marketing one.
