What is VoIP termination? A plain-English guide

by Reshetcall Team· March 4, 2026· 1 min read

When you place a call from a cloud phone system, that call has to get from your network to the recipient’s network — possibly on the other side of the world. VoIP termination is the service that delivers it.

How it works

Your system hands the call to a provider, who routes it across the global voice network and “terminates” it on the recipient’s local carrier. The recipient’s phone rings; they have no idea how many networks the call crossed to get there.

Why route quality matters

Not all routes are equal. The same destination can be reached by many paths, and they differ in:

  • Answer-Seizure Ratio (ASR) — how often calls actually connect.
  • Average Call Duration (ACD) — short durations can signal poor quality.
  • Mean Opinion Score (MOS) — the measured voice quality of the call.

A cheap route with low ASR and bad audio costs you more in lost calls and frustrated customers than a slightly pricier quality route.

CLI vs non-CLI

CLI routes pass your caller ID through so the recipient sees who’s calling — essential for sales and support. Non-CLI routes don’t guarantee caller ID but are cheaper, suitable for some outbound scenarios.

What to look for

Coverage on the destinations you actually call, transparent per-destination rates, real-time quality monitoring, and toll-fraud protection.
